Watch out for the gates
Sat navs do not always flag the ZTL: before entering the Upper Town, look out for «varco attivo» (gate active) signs and, if in doubt, park in the Lower Town.

Bergamo by car
The Upper Town is a limited traffic zone and street parking in the centre is paid: what to know when arriving by car, where to leave it and how to avoid fines.
The historic centre of the Upper Town is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) in force every day, around the clock: only authorised vehicles may enter and the gates are monitored by cameras. Entering without a permit leads to a fine sent by post, sometimes months later; with a rental car the fine goes through the rental company.
To visit the Upper Town by car there is the Parcheggio Città Alta on Via Fara, open 24/7 with about 470 spaces: its customers may enter the ZTL only through the gate on Viale Vittorio Emanuele II and must reach the car park within 30 minutes. It is simpler to leave the car in the Lower Town and go up by funicular or on bus 1.
At a glance
In the Lower Town, street parking is paid almost everywhere: blue lines apply every day, holidays included, from 8 am to 8 pm. In the central streets it costs about €2 an hour, with a maximum stay of 2 hours; in the areas around the centre about €1 an hour, for up to 3 hours.
Payment is made at the parking meters or with parking apps such as EasyPark, Telepass, MooneyGo or BMove, which also allow the stay to be extended from a phone. White lines are free unless signs say otherwise; yellow lines are reserved for residents, disabled badge holders or loading.

For longer stays, a car park is the better option. ATB, Bergamo's public transport company, runs several car parks open 24/7: Autolinee, next to the train and bus station; Garage San Marco on Via Zelasco, in the centre; Ex Gasometro and Via Baschenis. The stadium car park on Piazzale Goisis is reserved during matches and events.
For the Upper Town there is the Parcheggio Città Alta on Via Fara, open 24/7 (about €3.30 an hour, up to €30 a day). Rates vary from one car park to another: for stays of several days it is worth checking in advance.
At a glance
If the car is not needed during the stay, it can be left free of charge at a park & ride, with buses to the centre: at the Fiera di Bergamo (about 300 spaces, line 1), at Ex Bonini on Via San Bernardino (about 150 spaces, open 24/7, line 6) and on Via Gorizia, served by the new e-BRT line.
At a glance
Bergamo Hideout, on Via Angelo Maj about ten minutes' walk from the station, has a free private parking space next to the building: arrive, park and forget about blue lines and parking meters. From there, the centre, the restaurants and the funicular to the Upper Town are within reach on foot or by bus.
Near Bergamo DiMora, on Via Torquato Tasso, private attended car parks are available.
